Heal’s armchair in tiger oak, designed by renowned English architect Philip Tilden and Sir Ambrose Heal, in the later Arts and Crafts movement (1880-1920), c.1920s England, featuring a rectilinear lattice back above a drop-in rush seat. The chamfered solid oak structure with minimal carving, slightly curvaceous arms and square legs united by a sturdy 'H' stretcher is clean and spare.

Beautifully proportioned and excellent quality with natural wood artistry of rich straight grain and shimmering flakes achieved through quarter-sawing techniques. It reflects the Arts and Crafts movement's emphasis on craftsmanship, honesty in materials, modest in ornament and utility.

This chair was part of a dining suite and one of Heal's versions, appeared in the catalogue and poster of Heal's furniture shop in Tottenham Court Road, London in 1920s. Unmarked with Heal's ivorine disc label.

Heal's (originally Heal & Son, also known as Heals of London) was a prominent British furniture and homeware retailer, founded in 1810, known for popularizing the Arts and Crafts ethos in well-designed, quality domestic furniture through affordable, machine-made, primarily designed by Sir Ambrose Heal (1872–1959).

本作は、イギリスの著名な建築家フィリップ・ティルデンと、サー・アンブローズ・ヒールによってデザインされた、Heal’sのタイガーオーク製アームチェアです。

1880～1920年にかけて展開された後期アーツ・アンド・クラフツ運動の流れを汲むもので、1920年代頃のイングランドで制作されました。直線的な格子状の背もたれと、落とし込み式のイグサ座面が特徴です。面取りされた無垢のオーク材による構造は、最小限の彫刻装飾にとどめられ、わずかに曲線を描くアームと、H字型の貫で結ばれた角脚によって、清潔感のある簡潔な佇まいを見せています。

柾目挽きによって現れた豊かな直線的木目と、光を受けてきらめく虎斑が美しく、優れたプロポーションと高い品質を備えた一脚です。素材の正直さ、過度な装飾を排した造形、そして実用性を重視する姿勢は、アーツ・アンド・クラフツ運動が掲げた理念をよく体現しています。

本作はダイニングスイートの一部として制作されたもので、1920年代にロンドン・トッテナム・コート・ロードにあったHeal’s家具店のカタログおよびポスターにも掲載された、Heal’sによるヴァリエーションのひとつです。Heal’sの象徴であるアイボリン製ディスクラベルは付属していません。

Heal’s（旧称 Heal & Son、また Heals of London としても知られる）は、1810年創業のイギリスを代表する家具・生活用品の小売店です。サー・アンブローズ・ヒール（1872–1959）を中心に、手仕事の精神を尊重しながらも、機械生産を取り入れた良質で手の届く家具を通して、アーツ・アンド・クラフツの思想を広く普及させたことで知られています。
