Germany Multiplex, beech, MDF, black and white lacquered W 64 x D 61.5 x H 81.5 cm
De Stijl side table from ClassiCon, designed by the renowned Anglo-Irish designer, artist and architect, Eileen Gray in 1922.
One of Eileen Gray's favourite pieces, this side table was used in her living room of her Paris apartment up to the time of her death. In 1922 it showed in Amsterdam, part of an exhibition of French art. With a mutual admiration between her and De Stijl group, her designs were inspired by the Dutch innovative art movement – De Stijl. The visual revolution of cubism, the geometric order, the abstract, the sculptural quality and the use of colour are all De Stijl features.
The asymmetrical side table from every angle is made up entirely of lines and planes. Formed of multiplex and beech wood and finished in black and white satin lacquered. With a spatial system of asymmetric planes, the side table is designed like an individual architecture.
The rejection of the symmetry is also shown on her portrait only in profile.
The De Stijl side table was produced with ClassiCon at the start of 2004.
Prior to 2004, the De Stijl side table didn’t have a known manufacturer and any early models would have been commissioned to small local manufacturers and workshops by Eileen Gray.
ClassiCon, emerged from the traditional Vereinigte Werkstätten in Munich, produces Eileen Gray's designs since 1990 as the exclusive worldwide manufacturer under license from rights holder of Aram Designs Ltd, London.
